A recent survey tells us that 88% of Japanese people have already heard of Bitcoin, and that 47% of those who own it have already spent money on goods or services. The survey was released yesterday, and interviewed 10,000 Japanese.
Bitcoin is known to the majority
Japan has been trying to establish itself as a leading figure in cryptocurrency for a few years now. In April, the government was among the first to legalize bitcoins as a means of payment. In July, the 8% tax on the sale of bitcoin was lifted, and since then the acceptance of Bitcoin has been growing.
In a recent survey conducted by MacroMill Group, it was revealed that 56.2% of respondents had already heard of Bitcoin without really knowing the concept, and that 31.4% could claim to know what he was returning. In sum, this represents more than 80% of respondents who know Bitcoin more or less thoroughly.
This figure is slightly higher than the US average of a survey published earlier, which estimated the percentage of Americans aware of Bitcoin at about 75%.
Bitcoin as a means of payment?
Of the important data in this survey, 47% of bitcoin owners (present or past) have already used their bitcoins to pay for goods and services in various stores. In fact, 30% of the owners bought bitcoin only for this purpose, compared with 54% who bought it as a long-term investment.
This figure is high, and is probably due to the growing number of bitcoin-accepting stores, often as a result of popular demand. For example, Bic Camera - a technology and electronics giant - has started accepting bitcoins since July and - according to coincheck - more than 5,000 Japanese merchants accept the cryptocurrency-queen.
These results are part of the growing acceptance of Bitcoin, and its likely bright future in Japan.
